Parookaville’s Whacky Shack becomes
a euphoric three-day site-specific
immersive clubbing experience.
The mighty Parookaville festival occupies an abandoned military airport in Weeze near Düsseldorf annually. For the 2024 rendition, its 225,000 attendees could experience world famous EDM acts inside the Wacky Shack, a club sponsored by car brand CUPRA.
In collaboration with David+Martin and Rebel Media, we transformed the festival-club hybrid from an LED cave into an ecstatic site-specific immersive experience. This took place across three 12-hour days and featured up to 60 live sets including Marten Lou, LOVRA, Eskei83, as well as cult German band Tokio Hotel.
Spatial staging
The setup comprised of LED walls on both sides of the space, as well as behind and above the DJ booth. Two floor-to-ceiling mirrors on either side of the DJ booth extended the physical space by reflecting the content on the LEDs.
Using TouchDesigner we developed audio-reactive and interactive visual content such as noise fields, laser strokes, pointclouds (featuring CUPRA product content), vector art, surface modulation and typography.
Virtual Dimension
We extended the physical into the virtual space by creating realtime 3D, abstract polygonal worlds with a strong central perspective that reflected the brands visual language. Our custom unreal engine camera rig enabled us to synchronize a fully immersive environment across all LED walls.
Cosmic Avatar
To create visual interventions or “unexpected moments” we designed a futuristic avatar in Unreal Engine whose aesthetics encapsulated a glamorous, sultry and cosmic image of Parookaville festival-goers.
We utilized motion capturing to record natural human facial characteristics and body movements.
The avatar unexpectedly appeared during the live sets to energize the crowd. We also added a functionality for the Djs to control the facial expressions in real time during their live sets via their iPhone.
Live VJ-ing
We built a custom designed UI with reactive parameters for TouchDesigner and Unreal Engine to control up to 60 unique audio-reactive realtime abstract scenes. Our VJs remixed all visual assets live, on site.
